Get Facial-Perfect Skin
Facialist: Tracie Martyn, Tracie Martyn Salon, New York City
Celebrity clients: Kate Winslet; Madonna; Renee Zellweger; Susan Sarandon
Biggest Skin Challenge: "Lack of elasticity around the jawline and cheekbones. They're vulnerable areas as you age."
The most important thing I do every day: " I exfoliate my face and body before I get in the shower. If you don't get rid of the dead skin, the product you put on later won't penetrate as well. On my face I use Tracie Martyn Enzyme Exfoliant, a gentle pineapple enzyme mask with no harsh granules, just a very fine clay. On my neck and body, I spend five to ten minutes with a dry brush. The first few times you do it, it hurts a little, and a lot of dead skin comes off. But once it's part of your routine, it really wakes you up. I've been doing it for about ten years."
What I'd never do: "Eat junk. As much as possible, I avoid sugar, which can be a factor in wrinkle formation and skin discoloration. I also avoid high-sodium foods; they can cause water retention. I ask for low-sodium soy sauce at Japanese restaurants, and I use different natural sweeteners, like stevia, raw honey, and agave, in moderation.
My best tip: "As you get into your 40's you may not need a cleaning facial quite so often, your pores don't get blocked the way they did when you were younger. A cleanser that contains salicylic acid may be sufficient to keep your pores clean and minimize their appearance."
My most unorthodox tip: "I can always tell what side a client sleeps on, because that side of her face is the most lax. I used to be a yoga teacher, and there's at th end of the class called Savasana where you lie flat on your back and relax, and when you get up, your face looks amazing. I trained myself to sleep flat on my back, with the pillows on each side of my head. Even if you only manage to sleep part of the night on your back, it helps."
Favorite products: "Tracie Martyn Firming Serum, a potent serum that's deeply moisturizing and fights puffiness under the chin and along the jawline; Tracie Martyn LotuSculpt Activator, a peptide and hyaluronic-acid-based anti-wrinkle solution that helps build collagen; and Bernard Jensen Skin Brush."
